Over40CONNECT Privacy Policy
Over40CONNECT recognizes the importance of privacy and the sensitivity of personal information. As good community and corporate citizens, we have an ethical obligation to keep confidential all information we receive within a member-service provider relationship. We are committed to protecting any personal information we hold. This Privacy Policy outlines how we manage your personal information and safeguard your privacy.
Your Privacy Rights
From January 1, 2024, all businesses engaged in commercial activities must comply with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act and the Canadian Standards Association Model Code for the Protection of Personal Information. The Act gives you rights concerning the privacy of your personal information.
Over40CONNECT manages the personal information we collect and hold. To ensure this accountability, we have developed this policy.
Why Does Over40CONNECT Need Personal Information
Over40CONNECT is a subscription-based community for connecting people over 40 years of age, in the Ottawa area.
Personal information is any information that identifies you, or by which your identity could be deduced.
How do we collect your personal information?
We collect information only by lawful and fair means, and not in an unreasonably intrusive way.
Your personal information, and any other information or media you upload to the Over40CONNECT community, is stored on our secure hosting data centre in Montreal, Quebec.
The mandatory profile information you provide will be used by our administrators to confirm your identity.
Over40CONNECT uses your e-mail address to:
- let you know about posts and other activity on the forum,
- reset your password and help keep your account secure, and
- contact you in special circumstances related to your account.
You may provide more data for your account, like a short biography, your location, a photograph, or your birthday, on the profile settings page. Over40CONNECT makes that data available to other members of Over40CONNECT. You don’t have to provide this other information and OVER40CONNECT stores your account data as long as your account remains open.
Personal information is collected when you pay for your Over40CONNECT subscription. All credit card/payment information is collected and stored by Stripe and our administrators review this payment information as part of our verification process. Sometimes we may also obtain validation information about you from other sources, for example, your Facebook or LinkedIn profile.
Over40CONNECT collects the content of your posts, plus data about bookmarks, likes, and links you follow to share that data with others, through the forum. Over40CONNECT is access-restricted, so it makes your activity available only to other subscribed members.
Over40CONNECT also collects data about private messages that you send through the forum. Civilized Discourse Construction Kit, Inc. (CDCK), supports the social media engine/platform embedded in the site, and makes private messages available to senders and their recipients, and to our administrators.
Over40CONNECT stores your posts and other activity as long as your account stays open.
Over40CONNECT collects data you provide when signing up for mailing lists and announcements.
Over40CONNECT uses cookies. The information collected and stored in cookies may include IP addresses, device screen size, device type, device and browser identifiers, browser type and related information, preferences language, display options, portions of websites and online services visited, time spent on the community and online services, pages visited, referring URLs, links clicked on, country and city, and other traffic and usage data.
Consent
In most cases, we shall ask you to specifically consent, if we collect, use, or disclose your personal information. Normally, we ask for your consent in writing, but in some circumstances, we may accept your oral consent. Sometimes, your consent may be implied through your conduct with us.
Making choices about data collection
You can make choices about how data about you is used on the settings page for your account. When Over40CONNECT uses access restrictions that vary by category, you can choose who will see your post by choosing the category.
Use of Your Information
We use your personal information to administer your subscription and user profile on Over40CONNECT.
Disclosure of your Personal Information
Over40CONNECT does not share your personal information to any third party to enable them to market their products and services.
Under certain circumstances, Over40CONNECT will share your personal information:
- when we are required or authorized by law to do so, for example, if a court issues a subpoena,
- when you have consented to the disclosure,
- where it is necessary to set up or collect fees,
- if we engage a third party to provide administrative services to us (like computer backup services) and the third party is bound by our privacy policy,
- if the information is Publicly Available Personal Information, as it is defined under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act.
Updating Your Information
Since we use your personal information to verify your identity and compliance with the community rules, you must keep it up to date.
If any of your information changes, please inform us so that we can make any necessary changes.
Is My Personal Information Secure?
Over40CONNECT takes all reasonable precautions to ensure that your personal information is kept safe from loss, unauthorized access, modification, or disclosure. Among the steps taken to protect your information are:
- on-premises security,
- restricted file access to personal information,
- deploying technological safeguards like security software and firewalls to prevent hacking or unauthorized computer access, and
- internal password and security policies.
Access to Your Personal Information
You may ask for access to any personal information we hold about you.
Summary information is available on request. More detailed requests which require archive or other retrieval costs may be subject to our added fees.
Correcting Errors
If Over40CONNECT holds information about you and you can set up that it is not correct, complete, and up to date, Over40CONNECT will take reasonable steps to correct it.
Can I be denied access to my Personal Information?
Your rights to access your personal information are not absolute. We may deny access when:
- it is needed or authorized by law,
- to do so would reveal confidential commercial information, and the personal information cannot be severed from the record,
- to do so could reasonably be expected to threaten the life or security of another individual, and the personal information cannot be severed from the record, or
- the information was generated during a formal dispute resolution process.
If we deny your request for access to or refuse a request to correct information, we shall explain why.
Can I request anonymity.
Our members must share their personal information with Over40CONNECT. Upon request and in specific, special circumstances, your information on Over40CONNECT may be made anonymous to other members. To request anonymous access, email support@over40connect.com.
Communicating with Us
You should be aware that e-mail is not a 100% secure medium, and you should be aware of this when contacting us to send personal or confidential information.
Changes to this Privacy Policy
Since Over40CONNECT regularly reviews all its policies and procedures, we may change our Privacy Policy from time to time.

Employment Inquiries
If you apply to Over40CONNECT for a job, we need to consider your personal information, as part of our review process. We normally keep information from candidates after a decision has been made unless you ask us not to keep the information. If we offer you a job, which you accept, the information will be kept per our privacy procedures for employee records.
Web Site
Our website does not have links to other sites, which are not governed by this privacy policy.
On our website, like most other commercial websites, we may monitor traffic patterns, site usage and related site information to optimize our web service. We may provide aggregated information to third parties, but these statistics do not include any identifiable personal information.
